Zao is a metalcore band hailing from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, that emerged in popularity during the late 1990s. The band was founded in 1993 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, with no original members remaining. Notable former members include drummer Jesse Smith, vocalist Daniel Weyandt, and guitarists Scott Mellinger and Russ Cogdell, who are often regarded as the "core" of Zao. Initially, Zao was recognized as a devoted Christian band, influenced by the founding members' strong relationships with God. However, as time progressed and with changes in the band's vision—particularly due to Jesse Smith's influence—only half of the members identified as Christians, leading Zao to redefine itself as a group of open-minded artists. To date, Zao has released ten full-length albums, three EPs, and a two-disc DVD documentary, alongside multiple concert tours. The band has cultivated a limited but global fanbase and received critical acclaim throughout its career.
