Zwischenfall is an electronic band formed in 1982, consisting of Michael Sass (synths), Martin Urban (bass/vocals), and Stephan Kraemer (guitar/drums), all of German descent. They developed a unique sound that combined electronic and traditional instruments, which laid the foundation for their demo recordings. Their music caught the attention of Patrick Codenys from the Belgian electro pioneers FRONT 242, leading to the recording of a 4-song EP for the newly formed label MASK. This EP, titled "Heute," was released in 1983 after a week of recording in FRONT's private studio, with sound direction by Daniel B. At the time of recording, MIDI had not yet been invented, so the process involved extensive sound sculpting using individual synths for separate drum sounds. To achieve an organic feel, they incorporated acoustic and electric guitars, along with trumpet and bass, into their electronic arrangements. Zwischenfall's sound is characterized by hard rhythms and melancholic melodies, blending minimal yet catchy electronics to create danceable music. Their final release came in 1984 with the "Sandy Eyes" 12″ on Les Disques Du Crépuscule / Fuzz Dance. In 1995, Subtronic Records released a compilation titled “Gestern Und Heute,” which collected songs from 1981 to 1985. Currently, Stephan Kraemer works as a music producer and sound engineer in his studio in Germany.
